Sheri E. Smith My life has been woven through the years with my enchantment of fibers, art, gardening and the outdoors. When I was young, my mother and grandmother taught me to knit, crochet, embroider, cross stitch, and sew. As a young teen, I spent one entire summer knitting 6 dozen purses (that I had designed) to fill an order for a department store. My path to becoming a basket weaver came after moving to Oregon when I made my first splint woven egg basket. I soon began collecting local fibers, dying my own reeds, and branching out to other forms of basket weaving. I was enthralled with coiling and have been so ever since. I have taught the art to high school students and adults and have sold my work at fine art galleries in the Pacific Northwest. I am currently teaching at Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon. I feel as though I am a "TIME WEAVER," weaving in memories and portions of myself into each piece I create, while keeping one of the oldest crafts of humanity alive. |
